IICA to take part in forum on sustainable landscape management in Lima
Lima, Peru, November 18 2014 (IICA). The Global Landscapes Forum 2014 will be held in Peru from December 6-7. The meeting will focus on issues of common interest related to agriculture and climate change in the Americas, such as land use, development, energy and environmental conservation.
The forum will bring together representatives of institutions, the public and private sectors, academia, civil society and the mass media to share ideas on how to achieve optimal and sustainable landscape management without affecting soils and food production, in order to encourage better decision-making.
The meeting will address the most pressing challenges facing the world today, such as poverty reduction, food, water and energy supplies for a growing population, and adaptation to climate change, among others.
On December 7, the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Víctor M. Villalobos, will inaugurate the round table Inter-ministerial Dialogue on Agriculture and Environment in the Context of Climate Change, in which several Latin American ministers of agriculture will be participating.
The purpose of the round table is to promote a dialogue between agriculture and environment with emphasis on the role of family agriculture in increasing adaptation and mitigation of multifunctional landscapes to climate change.
Furthermore, IICA will give a presentation entitled Improvement in means of subsistence in the Andean region: scaling up innovations to integrate agriculture, forestry and other land uses in a changing climate, which will be followed by a debate on climate change adaptation and mitigation while reducing poverty at the landscape level.
The activity will be carried out within the framework of the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the world’s most important event on climate change, which will take place in Lima from December 1-12 with representatives from 150 countries. The delegates will engage in negotiations on the new global commitments such as the reduction of greenhouse gases.
The first Global Landscapes Forum, held in Warsaw, was used to present the landscape approach to people responsible for climate and development policies. It brought together more than 60 international organizations involved in the issues of forestry, agriculture, land use planning and human development.
The activity is coordinated by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Tropical Agriculture Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the CGIAR Consortium.
