The Dominican Republic launches its National Forestry Inventory

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, February 2019 (IICA).  On February 22, 2019, the IICA Office in the Dominican Republic participated in the launch of the National Forest Inventory in the Dominican Republic 2018, which was in charge of the Ministry of Environment and Resources Natural, where it was presented the forest cover of the country, as well as the percentages and quantities of each type of forest and its evolution.

The Inventory was carried out at the national level with the main objective of quantifying and characterizing the existing forest in the country, in order to promote the importance of forests for human life, highlight the importance of their conservation, and consider its contribution to food security, water production, as well as soil protection and electric power generation.

According to the results of the Inventory, the forest area of the Dominican Republic represents 43.6% of the territory of the country, with an extension of 2,103,645.32 hectares. This forest area is composed of seven types of ecosystems, according to the inventory, which shows the figures of forest cover of the country, the percentages and quantities of each type of forest and its evolution, according to the data presented by the Ministry.

The National Forestry Inventory was carried out with the support of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), through the Regional Program to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Central America and the Dominican Republic, of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (REDD / CCAD-GIZ) and the Cooperative Forest Carbon Fund (FCPF) of the World Bank.
