Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, July 30, 2018 (IICA). The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) approved its 2018-2022 Medium Term Plan (MTP), a document that establishes the guidelines for the technical cooperation that the Institute will provide in agricultural matters for the next four years.

The new institutional action plan was presented by the Director General of IICA, Dr. Manuel Otero before the ordinary meeting of the Executive Committee of the Institute, which is composed of twelve Member States elected for a period of two years. In this meeting, held on July 16-17, the members of the Committee approved the new work plan, whose implementation will begin immediately.

The new MTP prioritizes agriculture and rural development in the region. To this end, the new work plan will focus its actions on the following matters: territorial development and family agriculture, climate change, bioeconomy, productive development, trade and integration, natural resources and risk management and agricultural health and food safety.

During the meeting, Dr. Otero stressed that youth and gender issues, as well as technological innovation, will be transversal to the aforementioned topics established in the new MTP. Likewise, Otero emphasized on the creation of strategic alliances and the adoption of differentiated strategies to be key for the implementation of the 2018-2022 Medium Term Plan.

It is recalled that IICA carried out a consultative process with the institutions related to the agricultural sector in the Office Delegations of its 34 Member States, in order to obtain their contributions in the preparation of the new MTP.
