IICA launches second edition of Introduction to Entrepreneurship for Rural Women course, targeting Mexico, the Dominican Republic and the countries of Central America

This course seeks to develop the management and leadership capacities of women-led businesses in the rural areas of the Americas.

 

San Jose, 14 July 2023 (IICA) – The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture launched the second edition of the online course, “Introduction to Entrepreneurship for Rural Women”, this time targeting female entrepreneurs from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico.

After IICA’s first staging of the course during the first six months of this year, which trained 24 rural women in the Andean region, the hemispheric organization is reaffirming its commitment to promote self-paced learning among this group, to enable members to add value to their local entrepreneurial activities, develop their management capacities and strengthen their community leadership skills.

Registration will be open on July 14. Classes will begin on September 1 and 8 students from each country will be able to enroll. The course is an online and self-paced course that will be delivered via IICA’s e-learning platform.  

Candidates with an interest in the course should have some level of schooling, having attained no more than a secondary education. They should be eighteen years or over and operating businesses in the early stages of development—between one to six months old. If not, they should at least have a business idea.

The course was first offered in response to a request by the II Forum of Female Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Senior Officials of the Americas (July 2022) to provide training opportunities that would strengthen rural women’s skills and knowledge.

Women from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, working primarily in agricultural production or operating small to mid-sized business involved in the sale of fruits and vegetables, had the opportunity to access this learning forum and to strengthen their capacities in finance, marketing tools and business growth.

On completing the course, the entrepreneurs had to participate in a knowledge integration forum to obtain their certificate. The closing activities also included a discussion to allow participants to exchange knowledge and opinions on the first edition.
